If you loved Transparent, you might like director Jill Soloway's latest gender bender TV series I LOVE DICK. Or you might hate it - quite possibly.
What's it about?
Chris and Silvère, a middle-aged married couple, move from New York to Texas, where she falls in love with a Cowboy-come-sculpture-artist named Dick. Her obsession with him first sparks new excitement in the bedroom with her husband, but when Dick finds out about his being used as a sexual fantasy, things get really awkward really fast.
What's it REALLY about?
Female lust and obsession, feminism, homosexuality & gender stuff.
Who's in it?
The director is Jill Soloway who also created Transparent. Kathryn Hahn (aka Transparent's Rachel the Rabbi and Harper in Captain Fantastic) features as Chris. Dick is played by Kevin Bacon.
Main appeal: great acting, feminism, arthouse directing. Hahn does a fantastic job of playing a really unwieldy woman that you won't find particularly cool. Soloway continues to chop unlikely vintage scenes into her narratives like she already did in Transparent, which makes the whole thing unusual and exciting, and she's really turning that up to 11 here. The show is quite different to anything else I've seen.
Not the right thing if: you're looking for a feel-good series. This is a feel-awkward series - sometimes very awkward. Comparing it with Transparent, there's none of that lovely "California / we're broken but still a family / look at our enlightened spiritual community / house with a pool" vibe. I LOVE DICK plays out in an entirely unromanticised wild west environment where wearing flip flops is too dangerous. I LOVE DICK is also not the right thing to watch with a first date, but you figured that when you read the title. If you are of a more consy persuasion, you probably also won't enjoy it because it's full of liberated naked women.
Soundtrack: Soloway has a good hand for selecting music, mixing old and new songs, although the soundtrack is not quite TRANSPARENT-grade wonderful. Still. Think Rodrigo y Gabriela, Roberta Flack, Calexio, Iron & Wine, Marlene Dietrich.
When did it come out?
2016 - Season 1, and that's all there is for now.
Know-it-all fact: I LOVE DICK is loosely based on an allegedly true story with the same title written by the real Chris Kraus herself (1997).
Where can I watch it?
